Generational Healing

What is Generational Healing?

Generational healing is rooted in scripture. It is a common theme throughout the Bible that the sins of our ancestors are passed down through the generations.

Ex 34: 6-7   And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

Deu 5: 9-109 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

John 9: 1-3 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “ Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

We know that predispositions for certain diseases are passed down through the generations such as diabetes, alcoholism, asthma and the like. And so is our spiritual predisposition to disease passed down from our ancestors. The recognition that certain family groups have tendencies to develop certain spiritual and emotional problems is a reflection of spiritual weaknesses.

It is important for people to be aware of generational negatives and positives we inherit both physically and spiritually. The negative inheritances which descended upon us, through our ancestry, can be broken, and the wounding healed through generational healing.

Identifying our personal family patterns and blessings can be done by filling out a genogram or ancestral ‘Family Tree’.  Just filling out the genogram often helps us find out how we can best pray, in two ways:

  1. Finding out how God has given our families certain gifts of character for which we can thank and praise him.
  2. Finding out patterns of weakness which we need to break through with prayer.

A prayer service with a faith community follows, with the power of the Spirit through corporate prayer, breaking long held patterns and releasing the Holy Spirit to work in these areas of our lives.

The “Family Tree” is carried to the front of the church during the Generational Healing Service. Even those who have previously participated in a like service take part in the prayers and offering of their own family tree. Later these are destroyed with no one viewing its contents. All is kept confidential.

Communion is offered in this service and part of the healing process. All baptized Christians are invited to the communion table. St. Andrews would like to be this faith community for you.
